Nociceptive Pain

About Nociceptive Pain

output-onlinepngtools
Nociceptive pain is the body’s normal protective response to actual or potential tissue damage, triggered when specialized sensory nerve endings called nociceptors detect harmful mechanical, thermal, or chemical stimuli. Unlike neurogenic pain from nervous system dysfunction, nociceptive pain serves an adaptive warning function—think stubbing your toe, touching a hot stove, or spraining an ankle.

Types & Characteristics

  • Somatic: Sharp, well-localized aching/throbbing from skin, muscles, bones, joints (e.g., fractures, cuts, osteoarthritis). Pain worsens with movement.
  • Visceral: Dull, cramping, poorly localized from organs (e.g., appendicitis, gallstones). Often referred (shoulder pain from diaphragm irritation).
Nociceptors (A-delta for sharp pain, C-fibers for dull ache) transmit via spinal cord to brain. Acute by nature, it typically resolves with tissue healing but can persist as chronic inflammatory pain (e.g., osteoarthritis).
