About Migraine Headaches

output-onlinepngtools
Migraine Headaches (MH) are prevalent in 15% of the population affecting women 3:1 compared to men. MH are a neurological disorder featuring recurrent episodes of moderate-to-severe throbbing head pain, typically unilateral (one-sided) but sometimes bilateral, lasting 4-72 hours if untreated, with a 60% moderate to severe impairment during attacks. Unlike tension headaches (bilateral band-line) and cluster headaches (autonomic, shorter duration), MH involve brain hypersensitivity and progress through phases: prodrome (hours-days prior: mood swings, yawning, cravings), aura (20-30% cases: visual zigzags/scotomas, sensory tingling, speech issues lasting 20-60 min), headache (pulsating pain worsened by activity, nausea/vomiting, photophobia, phonophobia, osmophobia), and postdrome (exhaustion, cognitive fog).

Symptoms

People describe unilateral throbbing pain over the frontal/temporal/occipital regions, sensory hypersensitivity (light/sound/smell), neck stiffness, allodynia (scalp tenderness), aura: scintillating scotoma, hemianesthesia and nausea and/or vomiting in 60-80% of people.

Known Causes

  • Primary: Cranialcervical instability, dysautonomia, familial migraine mutations genetic expression, along with along with nutrient deficiencies, systemic toxicities or infections.
  • Secondary: Hormonal fluctuations (menstruation, estrogen drop), stress, sleep disruption, tyramine foods, weather/barometric changes, caffeine withdrawal, medications, or sensory overload.
