About Meralgia Paresthesia (MP)

output-onlinepngtools
MP is uncommon, with no precise population-wide rates established in major studies from the provided data; it affects adults primarily (ages 30-60), more often in obese individuals or during pregnancy, but exact incidence remains underreported. (MP), also known as lateral femoral cutaneous nerve entrapment, is a mononeuropathy causing pain, tingling, numbness, or burning sensations in the outer thigh due to compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN), a purely sensory nerve supplying skin sensation to the anterolateral thigh.

Symptoms

Symptoms are unilateral (rarely bilateral), including burning pain, tingling/paresthesias, numbness, hypersensitivity to light touch (allodynia), or aching in the outer upper thigh; they worsen with standing, walking, or tight clothing and improve with sitting or hip flexion—no motor weakness occurs.

Known Causes

  • Primary: Spinal instability, entrapment of the LFCN under the inguinal ligament from mechanical pressure: obesity/weight gain, pregnancy, tight belts/pants, heavy tool belts, or abdominal distension.
  • Secondary: Associated with diabetes mellitus, direct trauma (e.g., seatbelt injury), nerve injury from surgery, post-surgical scarring (e.g., hernia repair), hypothyroidism, along with along with nutrient deficiencies, systemic toxicities or infections.
